Description

More than 40 years ago, Saudi engineer Sami Kurdi developed a strong interest in collecting postage stamps, which became his first step into the world of rare historical artifacts. He later expanded his passion to coin collecting and went on to establish a museum that now houses around 100,000 pieces.

His deep exploration of historical artifacts led him to establish a comprehensive museum documenting the history of Makkah and other regions, making it a destination for visitors and heritage enthusiasts alike.

Kurdi told Asharq Al-Awsat that his journey with heritage began during his university studies, where frequent visits to local auctions and museums enriched his knowledge and expertise in cultural heritage. His passion gradually expanded, eventually leading him to collect a wide range of heritage items. He added that the idea of founding the museum came to him immediately after retirement in early 2014, and it took four years to fully prepare and complete the museum.

He also highlighted rare Ottoman-era decrees (firmans) dating back 150 to 200 years, which he inherited from his ancestors and considers among the museum’s most valuable items. In addition, he takes pride in owning the first paper passport issued during the era of the founding King Abdulaziz, nearly 90 years ago.

The museum also features a significant collection of rare coins, some of which date back to pre-Islamic times, alongside Islamic-era coins and old Saudi currency from the reign of King Abdulaziz to the present day, including gold, silver, copper, and nickel pieces.

Guests arrive at the museum and are welcomed with the venue’s signature drink, followed by a brief introduction from the guide about the site and the experience ahead.

A short orientation with the guide explaining the museum’s concept and giving an overview of what visitors will explore.

Time allocated for relaxation, where children can enjoy available activities, while guests may have lunch, sit in designated areas, or enjoy the surrounding atmosphere.

A final recap with the guide or interpreter, sharing additional insights about the museum and its collection, followed by heading to transportation for departure.
